Painting Hope: Our Visit to Haven for Girls, Pampanga
By Eloiza Mariano Serate
Some stories don’t need a headline—just a moment. And last weekend, we lived one.
We visited the Haven for Girls in San Vicente, Magalang, Pampanga—a rescue center run by the DSWD. It provides shelter, care, and a second chance for young women who have survived abuse, trafficking, or exploitation. What we didn’t expect? Just how young some of them were. Early middle schoolers, bright-eyed and full of life. Some were young moms, caring for toddlers and babies with grace far beyond their years.
Who They Are
These girls aren’t just survivors. They are artists, dreamers, and warriors-in-the-making. The facility offers them a lifeline: medical care, legal aid, psychosocial support, and temporary housing. But more than that, it offers them dignity.
A Day to Remember
We started the day by introducing ourselves. Right away, we felt their warmth. Then came the games—classic “Stop Dance” and “Dancing Chairs.”
Laughter echoed. Some girls were shy at first, but soon everyone was laughing, dancing, and showing their competitive spirit. It was pure joy in motion.
I took a moment to speak to them. I shared what we do at Virtual Champions PH, how being a virtual assistant empowers women to work from anywhere and build a sustainable future. I told them that no matter where they come from, they too can find opportunities to grow, thrive, and eventually give back.
Painting Bags, Painting Dreams
Next came our creative session: painting printed canvas bags. The artistry that flowed from their hands was incredible. They poured their emotions and imagination into each stroke. Passion. Precision. Pride.
We also handed out food packs, toiletries, and essential supplies—just small tokens to support their everyday needs. While waiting for lunch to arrive, a spontaneous singing contest broke out. Voices rose, the room filled with cheer, and for a moment, you could forget where we were. It felt like a celebration.
The Moment That Changed Me
After the event, one of our team members shared something that stopped me in my tracks: she was once a rescue woman too.
Today, she’s a thriving professional and a proud mom. She told me stories of others like her who’d gone on to become policewomen, accountants, and business owners. Her message was clear: being rescued is not the end. It’s just the beginning.
Why This Matters
Too often, society writes people off because of where they started. But these women—they’re not leftovers. They’re in the middle of becoming. And sometimes, all it takes is a single day of joy, connection, and validation to remind someone they’re seen.
We may not be remembered by name. But maybe, just maybe, they’ll remember the day someone came, painted bags with them, laughed with them, and told them they matter.
